Leaveraging a mid-career pivot - again, and again!
For this Member Check-in we are delighted to be joined by Anica Alvarez Nishio
who will share how her varied career brought her to a non-executive portfolio and more.
Anica Alvarez Nishio is an ethicist, editor and public advocacy specialist with an emphasis on values-led organisational development. She has served on a number of boards and funding organisations with a focus on health, education, marginalised groups and community engagement.
Anica’s career started in Hollywood, in the film industry. She then pivoted into publishing, followed by freelance editorial work. She successfully pivoted again, using her strategic insight to expand into consultancy work, initially in the charity sector and now more broadly. She has developed a non-executive portfolio career, with a focus on health and academic research.
Anica is a Lay Rep for Health Education England
; Quality Standards Committee member for NICE
— the National Institute of Health and Care Excellence; she sits on one of the larger funding committees for the National Institute of Health Research
; an arms-length body advising the Ministry of Defence
on Veterans’ Affairs; and the Monitoring Board
of a Category C men’s prison. She is also working with the University of Oxford to bring a public advocacy lens to front-line academic research and has just embarked on a Masters at Cambridge in Artificial Intelligence and Ethics.
Going forward, she is taking on more private sector, project-based work, primarily in the artificial intelligence space, with a particular interest in issues of security.
