Wales needs more female board directors and trustees so come along to a networking evening with wine and nibbles to broaden your understanding of the range of opportunities out there, understand how your skills and experience are transferable and to meet other board members, both current and future.
The WOB network is here to support you and can connect you, via these evenings with the women in Wales who are on or interested in boards. The purpose of this event is to introduce you to the different types of board opportunity across the sector and to hear from a panel of board directors with a wealth of experience, who will share their individual journeys to the boardroom. As well as picking up insights and ideas, this will be a great opportunity to broaden your network. Alison Thorne and Marian Evans WOB's team in Wales will be facilitating this evening.
Alison Thorne, Founder, atconnect, NED and WOB UK Ambassador and Masterclass Presenter
Alison held executive board and leadership positions at Mothercare, Lego Retail, George at Asda, Kingfisher and Otto UK and has a range of non-executive and committee roles. She spent over two years as a partner in an executive search firm, set up a business that supports companies to deliver through their people and now also combines this experience to mentor individuals at transition points in their careers. Alison is Chair of the leading equality charity Chwarae Teg and a Board Member of Sport Wales. Alison is a presenter for WOB's Board CV Masterclass and also provides the follow up one-on-one support. She is based in Cardiff and is WOB's Lead for members in Wales.
Marian Evans, NED, Business Founder, WOB UK Ambassador and Presenter
Marian is a multiple business owner. Founder and Director of Elevate BC Ltd. Marian was named 'Inspirational Woman of the Decade' in the WIB Wales awards 2019 awarded ‘UK Mentor of the Year 2018 (Women in Financial Advice Awards). A qualified Executive Coach, a Chartered Insurance Broker and Associate of the Chartered Insurance Institute (CII), Marian is also one of only 5 individuals in Wales to be awarded the Fellowship of the Institute of Leadership and Management, the highest level awarded by the Institute.
Marian's other businesses include a property investment company and Llansteffan Castle Ltd (having bought the Castle a few years ago). Marian was previously executive director at Thomas Carroll Group leading the Special Risks division. And prior to this Marian had worked her way up from the grass roots at NFU Mutual where she was one of the youngest and first women to hold a number of positions as she climbed the ranks.
Marian is currently a Non-Executive Director on the Cirencester Friendly Society Ltd Board a school governor and C-Suite, Executive and NED Coach and advisor.
Non Executive Director
Lindsay is an experienced board member at both executive and non executive level across the third and public sectors. Lindsay has a wealth of senior management experience which she now uses to support senior leadership teams.
For almost 20 years, Lindsay was a Director for Mind Cymru before she set up her own coaching and consultancy business. In 2015, Lindsay became a non executive director with Wales Audit Office.
Jan Williams OBE
Chair of Public Health Wales
Jan is Chair of Public Health Wales and holds an OBE for services to the health sector. Jan has senior leadership experience across the whole healthcare system in Wales. She joined the NHS in 1979 and held a number of senior posts at NHS Trust , Health Authority and Health Board level.
Jan has also had senior positions in Welsh government. Prior to joining Public Health Wales, Jan was the independent police complaints commission commissioner for Wales, Cheshire and Merseyside police forces.
Emma del Torto
Managing Director and Board Trustee
Emma is a non-practising solicitor with more than 20 years’ experience of employment law and HR. She’s the founder and MD of EffectiveHRM – a full service, outsourced HR consultancy. Emma is an advocate of flexible working, robust management and straight-talking. She’s the pioneer of the “Setting People Free” approach to HR. She really enjoys solving complicated work place issues and strategising and delivering change projects.
Emma’s first board position was on the board of Wales and West Housing Association. She currently sits on the Board of Chapter Arts Centre and chairs their HR Committee. She is also a Community Councillor and School Governor.
