In The Fox Hole

2/08/2019
Recent WOBSX graduate and the latest addition to the board of Syrah Resources (ASX: SYR), Sara Watts, was in The Fox Hole in Sydney’s CBD last week, to talk about her journey to the boardroom at our latest WOBMeet event.

Aside from a stellar 10 years at IBM where she stepped off as CFO for ANZ and much experience in audit roles, critical to Sara’s success has been her open-ness to all opportunities and a self-imposed rule to ‘always take the call', even if she is unsure where it might lead.

This has stood her in good stead with board roles coming on Bagtrans, Vision Australia and the Australian Museum (a call from the Minister who had been put on hold while a receptionist asked if Sara minded giving him her mobile number!) and a number of government audit and risk committees – where Sara established her reputation as a safe and reliable pair of hands.

Also in the audience on Wednesday was long-time WOB member and experienced global Chair and NED, Helen Wiseman, now on the board of Bid Corporation and Soho Flordis International. Helen made her mark serving on (and chairing) not-for-profit boards; which she advocates as a great learning ground for younger and first-time directors seeking an opportunity to serve.

Once again, WOBMeet proved a great place to network, share and learn from the experiences of other WOB members in an informal and convivial atmosphere. You never know who will turn up and who you will make a connection with. Make sure you register for the next WOBMeet in your state.
