Guest Speaker: Shirley Chowdhary

Shirley’s current portfolio aims to create commercially sustainable and inclusive services for all members of our community. Her career has been driven by a strong desire to create a connection between people, place and purpose and this work was recognized when she was selected as one of the 2019 AFR 100 Women of Influence.

Shirley is an internationally experienced board director with a diverse set of expertise across law, financial services, the NFP sector and journalism. She is admitted to practice law in Australia and New York (having completed the New York bar) and has worked across Asia and Australia in the corporate and for-purpose sectors.

Shirley is currently a non-executive director on the boards of the Australian Associated Press and the Royal Australian Institute of Architects, and is Chair of the Advisory Board of Octadoc, a med-tech start up. She is consulting with a number of organisations including the Criterion Institute on gender-lens investing, the Paul Ramsay Foundation on systems change within the NFP sector, Northrop Consulting and Scanlan Theodore, one of Australia’s leading fashion designers.

Career highlights include being Regional Counsel Asia Pacific for JP Morgan Investment Management; Chief Executive Officer for the GO Foundation, an Australian Indigenous organisation founded by Adam Goodes and Michael O’Loughlin; host of the Women’s Agenda podcast series, The Leadership Lessons; and author of a range of writings including a biography for a WW2 prisoner-of-war.

Shirley is a keynote speaker and presenter for Saxton Speakers and her portfolio includes an extensive array of mentoring and volunteering.

Claire is a social entrepreneur and businesswoman based on the NSW Central Coast. She co-founded Women on Boards in Australia in 2006 and in the UK in 2012 following a career in journalism and public relations. She is an experienced Non-Executive Director on small businesses and large Not-For-Profit organisations and has significant expertise on board governance in many other sectors. 

Claire is a highly respected facilitator and speaker on a range of topics in the area of board governance, equity and diversity. She is an informed and entertaining MC and presenter and well known for her courage, conviction, compassion and confidence; and as someone who looks for new ideas and opportunities. 

In 2011 Claire became a Churchill Fellow for her research into gender balance on boards in Norway, France and the UK. She is also a graduate of the Benevolent Society’s Sydney Social Leadership Program which has led to a lifelong interest in affordable housing and related social issues, particularly those impacting women and children.
