Finance Essentials

Being able to understand the financial accounts of an organisation is an essential skill for board members. You don't need to be a numbers expert or to be deeply familiar with accounting standards and terminology, but you do need to have a basic understanding of key elements of a Balance Sheet and Profit & Loss / Income & Expenditure Statement, along with the confidence to ask questions on areas which are not clear or give you cause for concern.

It is suited to those who have a basic grasp of financial concepts as well as the more financially sophisticated who need a refresher. It provides a framework for commercial and financial analysis and will enable you to:

  • Understand financial information and speak the language of financial and commercial concepts
  • Identify commercial and financial “red flags”
  • Build the bridge between the Board and operational aspects of your business.

Mike Hill - Forensic Partner at McGrathNicol

Mike specialises in dispute advisory, forensic investigations and business reviews and is a registered liquidator. Having worked as a Chartered Accountant for more than 20 years, Mike has extensive experience in the preparation of expert reports as part of legal proceedings and conducting investigations on behalf of government, financiers and private sector clients. He has undertaken insolvency assignments, performed viability assessments, business case reviews and financial modelling. He is also a director of an APRA licensed superannuation Acting Trustee.

Mike has worked across a wide range of industry sectors, including financial services, resources, construction, government, retail, manufacturing and superannuation. As a respected expert in the field, he has given evidence in a range of Australian Supreme Courts as well as the Federal Court.

He has acted as an independent or consulting expert on a variety of matters, including on regulatory investigations, class actions brought in relation to disclosure issues, and has prepared independent expert reports dealing with the quantification of loss and other accounting related topics.

Melissa Smith - Director at McGrathNicol

Melissa is a highly skilled restructuring and turnaround specialist, having worked on a number of complex formal engagements including trading businesses. She has extensive experience in conducting independent business reviews and monitoring projects for both private and public sector clients.

Recent projects include conducting an independent business and accounting review for a series of entities controlled by Ipswich City Council, including consideration of their current financial position, investment strategy and restructuring options for better control of their operations. Melissa has also worked on a range of formal insolvency appointments including Samgris Resources, Marine Contracting, Sargent Truck Rentals and Viking Industries Limited.

Melissa’s experience covers a broad range of industries, including resources and mining, agribusiness, transport and logistics, hospitality and property. She has also undertaken secondments at financial institutions assisting in their asset management divisions.
