Getting Started: Realising your board potential

A half-day workshop designed for anyone considering their first non executive director board role or seeking to add a new NED role to their portfolio.  A fast-paced tour through everything you need to know about directorship and how to do yourself justice as a candidate, along with strategies for including board work in your career - whether you are 25 or 65.

Many of us are convinced that we have the skills and wisdom to contribute to the boardroom as non-executives or trustees, but don't know enough about the role or the board recruitment process to position ourselves to get there.  Others are intrigued by the possibility of having a real impact on society through directorship, but need convincing that their experience is transferable to the boardroom, along with some insights into how to access the roles.  If either of these sounds like you, you will enjoy this workshop and leave with a renewed commitment to finding a position.

The content has been carefully developed from many years working to help hundreds of women take action to address their career challenges and aspirations. The topics covered in the workshop include:

  •  Managing your career, and how to include a non-executive director (NED) position
  •  About directorship; the role, duties and legal responsibilities of directors and trustees
  •  Directorship opportunities; market intelligence on board roles and how to apply
  •  Doing yourself justice when applying for board roles

The workshop is practical, strategic and interactive. It is about providing you with the information and self-belief to take the next steps in your board career. It runs for three and a half hours with a short break.  Participants are engaged and supported by the Women on Boards team and are encouraged to be active with follow-up opportunities.  Most importantly, participants become part of a unique network of support and influence for women interested in building a non-executive career strategy, wherever they are on that journey.

Suited to people:

  1. Thinking about board roles for the first time and seeking strategic and practical advice on accessing these positions
  2. With board experience, but looking to target more strategic / paid board roles, perhaps in a different sector
  3. Seeking to develop their career resilience - for example around career breaks

To learn more, see videos below. The first provides an overview of the Getting Started Workshop and the second discusses WOB's boardroom development options more generally.

If you cannot make one of our Getting Started workshops in person but would instead like to join a Directors@Distance webinar, which covers the same content over 2 lunch-time sessions, then please check out our webinar calendar (Webinar Calendar).

Comments from past participants

"Fantastic workshop!  It increased my understanding and awareness of boards, and increased my understanding of what I need to do to get there.  I'm only at the beginning of my journey, but I now see a path.  Thank you"

"A huge thank you for a brilliant workshop yesterday.  Having gained experience at board level  in both executive positions and in a voluntary capacity with a multi-academy trust board, I had set out to secure paid appointments, but had not had any immediate success. The workshop reminded of the knowledge and skills I have already gained around governance, how directors add value, and statutory duties. Hearing that searching for a non-executive position is a huge commitment, that I need to build confidence to use my network, meet with contacts, develop a good profile, and that it may take time, has really helped.  I feel re-inspired to continue my search"

"Thank you WOB UK, for such an inspirational workshop.  I came away with lots of practical ideas for improving my board profile, as well as the confidence to apply for the right kind of NED roles.  It was also a pleasure to meet my fellow delegates - what an impressive bunch!  I have already made some useful and interesting contacts"

Comments from past workshop participants

"I didn’t realise that 3 hours had passed!  An extremely enlightening, informative session, leaving me feeling enriched, interested and educated on an area that I though was something that was “old Boys School” world.  Interested and full of ambition as to where WOB can take me.  Thank you WOB for opening my eyes!” Cisco Systems workshop

"The anecdotes and case studies were particularly useful, and all the advice on the day was targeted and well thought out. I’ve since been inspired to apply for a board position and the Women on Boards team have been very supportive, quickly responding to my plea for help in reviewing my profile summary and making useful connections to help with the process." "Despite the fact that I was one of the most inexperienced people there, I gained an incredible amount of knowledge that I could start implementing immediately.  For example, giving my manager regular updates and highlighting my achievements.  Thank you WOB"  Wessex Water workshop
